about

The Cat Heads are proud to present the deluxe reissue of their second album Submarine.

Long out of print since its original vinyl release in 1988, Submarine is now available digitally for the first time ever.

With the original ¼” master tapes having vanished into the murky depths of time (and the band generally unhappy with the earlier mix in any event), the 24-track tapes were located and remixed by album co-producer Wally Sound. The new mix is a revelation, documenting the band at the height of their studio powers, switching rapidly through assorted genres and styles at whiplash speed.

Featuring several outtakes, alternate mixes and one unreleased track (a cover of the lost soul classic “Good Things” by Charles Wright), the expanded "Submarine (Deluxe)" provides a new opportunity to revisit one of the great lost American indie albums of the 1980s.

Reviews of Submarine:

The second album from this San Francisco quartet is another top-notch alternative music free-for-all flaunting the band’s skillful eclecticism and a sense of humor as delightfully squirrely as the group’s name. Here they romp through Replacements-style mile-a-minute melodic gems, switch gears for a psychedelic rave-up, throw in a little hoedown and some folksy rock ballads a la Fairport Convention and top things off with a surprise ending track that would make Rudy Vallee blush. “Submarine” may go off the deep end, but with a wacky, talented crew like the Cat Heads leading the way, it’s worth taking the plunge. Chicago Tribune (July 17, 1988)
_______________

The Cat Heads' extreme stylistic waverings coalesced on Submarine, with the focus mostly on the band's melodic psychedelic/country leanings. "Postcard," "Sister Tabitha" and "Upside Down" are wonderful originals. Co-producer David Lowery (at that time of Camper Van Beethoven, later of Cracker) seems to favor singer Clarin's contributions. The album was the band's swan song and remains listenable and unmired in the '80s production that marred so many of the era's recordings. Denise Sullivan, All Music Guide.
________________

The winsome Submarine . . . wisely concentrates on the band’s strengths, sticking to more melodic material and allowing drummer Melanie Clarin (concurrently a member of Donner Party) to sing more. As a result, Submarine (co-produced by David Lowery of Camper Van Beethoven) consistently captures the haunting melody of Hubba’s best moments (as on “Postcard” and “Sister Tabitha”) without ditching the goofy humor (“Jiggy Sawdust/Gumshoe” or the melodic rock edge (“Upside Down,” “Apologize”). Scott Schinder, Trouser Press
________________

The Cat Heads released two albums via the Restless label: 1987's Hubba and Submarine in 1988. Both sported a clangorous jangle equal parts post-punk and roots rock, sounding at times like a countrified Replacements. Mike Rowell, SFWeekly.
